deLacour Birepetition Watch

Filed under: Timepieces Watch maker deLacour never fails to release something interesting. I can’t always speak as to the practicality of the watches, but they are always fun to check out. For example, in this Birepetition watch, the moonphase indicator include a “shooting star” that occasionally shoots though the view. This beautiful and highly complex movement was part of a venture with Christophe Claret, one of the only people who is able to conceive and deliver on movements like this. So what does the watch do? There are two time zones, and each time has its own minute repeater complication – operated by a level on each side of the watch. This is the first watch that I know of to have such a double minute repeater chiming mechanism. There is also a skeletonized big date, the time zone hours are on retrograde scales and share the same large minute hand. Then there is the moon phase that I discussed earlier with its whimsical shooting star complication. How do you feel about the honeycomb pattern on the skeletonized dial/movement? I think it is pretty interesting. Alludes to the complexity of what is inside, just like a bee hive. It is also a clever surfacing technique that hasn’t been done much. The watch is large across and in gold with all the luxury fixings you could ask for. Click to read more to see a video of the deLacour Birepetition watch in action. Dead Gnomes: idiotically grinning ghastly garden gnomes

Out of the Blue’s “Dead Gnome” line features garden gnomes with pistols in their mouths, or holding up the dripping heads of decapitated brethren, industriously sawing their own hands off, hanging from a gibbet, grinning glassily at the arrow that’s pierced their heads, and so on. It’s the wet, happy grins that get me. Dead Gnome (Thanks, Alice!)…

Billy Mays’ pallbearers honor the man in blue

Although Michael Jackson’s upcoming funeral will surely be a feeding frenzy for photographers, it’ll be hard to beat this photo op from today’s burial ceremony for TV pitchman Billy Mays. With their khakis and rolled-up long-sleeve blue shirts, the pallbearers gave a fitting homage to the uniform that was almost as memorable as Mays’ well-manicured beard. Mays died at his home June 28 from apparent natural causes. According to the Associated Press , which distributed the photo, Mays’ eulogy covered everything from childhood memories to his devout Christian faith to his personal mantras like, “Life’s a pitch, and then you buy.” —Posted by David Griner

Geohot Sneaks Out iPhone 3GS Jailbreak Early

Geohot aka George Hotz aka the first person to unlock the original iPhone (with solder), has released a jailbreak for the iPhone 3GS. And, the naughty boy, he has taken the work done by the iPhone Dev Team (the folks behind all previous software unlocks) and posted it early. The iPhone Dev Team are waiting for the v3.1 software release from Apple before “officially” making the hack available, ostensibly to avoid the hack being patched by Apple. But as it is already ready, Geohot, a member of the Dev Team, has gone ahead and put it out for download. The unlock is Windows-only, and you’ll need an iPhone 3GS to use it on, of course. I have neither, so I can’t test it, but GeoHot at least has a good reputation. According to The Register, Hotz says the hack, named “purplera1n” is “awesome.” Maybe, but if it lets you load up the carrier-unlocking applications available for jailbroken iPhones. we’ll probably agree. Happy Fourth of July!

American Independence Day is tomorrow. It’s a day for drinking beer (according to Sloshspot , Americans drink more beer on July 4 than on any other day of the year), grilling out and hanging with family and loved ones. So to all AC’s American friends we say — go do some of the above tomorrow. And to all our outside of America friends we say — why not go do some of the above tomorrow, too? In the immortal words of Bartles and Jaymes themselves, we thank you for your support. See you on Monday. .
